Huddersfield a Potted History: A historic and huge market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is at present the eleventh largest town (not including cities) in the UK, housing a population of about 168,000. The town is placed about halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is some 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre for the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in that borough. It sits in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial area, renowned over the centuries for the production and manufacture of wool, textiles, electric motors, sheet metal and chemicals. It was the scene of much unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers known as the Luddites, faced with losing their livelihood due to the threat of mechanization, wrecked mills and their machines and in some cases even attacked and killed mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the largest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud tradition with regards to sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over payments to players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 and were the first English club to win 3 league titles on the trot.

The town has been the birthplace of several prominent Huddersfield including the likes of Chris Balderstone, Derek Ibbotson, actor James Mason and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
