About Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the UK's 11th largest town, boasting a population of somewhere near 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is positioned roughly midway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is approximately 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest urban settlement in the borough. It stands in the valleys of the River Colne and the River Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial area, well known over the years for the manufacture of sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors, textiles and wool. Huddersfield was the scene of some unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood thanks to increased mechanisation, damaged mills and their machines and even went to the extreme of attacking and killing textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing the biggest employer in Huddersfield these days is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been settled for over four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sports and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and three successive league titles.
