About Huddersfield: A historic and huge market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is actually the 11th largest town (not including cities) in the UK, being home to a population of just over 168,000. Huddersfield is placed roughly halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is some 190 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in the borough. It sits in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial town, renowned over the years for the manufacture of textiles, wool, chemicals, electric motors and sheet metal. The town was the scene of some unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood due to the threat of mechanisation, wrecked weaving machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of murdering textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or industry the largest employer in Huddersfield at present is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a proud tradition in relation to sports and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win three successive league titles (1923-1926).

The Huddersfield area has been the birthplace of many famous Huddersfield including the likes of James Mason, former PM Harold Wilson, athlete Derek Ibbotson and footballer and cricketer Chris Balderstone.
