Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a row over payments to players. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were also famous for winning three successive league titles in the 1920's.

The town has been the birthplace of several noteworthy Huddersfield including James Mason, Derek Ibbotson (athlete), footballer and cricketer Chris Balderstone and former PM Harold Wilson.
