About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the UK, Huddersfield at the current time is the eleventh largest town (not including cities) in the United Kingdom, housing a population in excess of 168,000 (2017). The town is positioned about midway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is about 191 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in the borough. Huddersfield stands in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, widely known over the centuries for the manufacturing of chemicals, wool, sheet metal, textiles and electric motors. The town was the scene of considerable unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, scared of losing their livelihood as a result of greater mechanisation, demolished mills and weaving machinery and even attacked and murdered mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in the town at present is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were also famous for winning three successive league titles (1923-26).
