Review of Huddersfield: An enormous and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is at present the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, being home to a population of approximately 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is placed midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is some 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in that borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is to the south of the town adjacent to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial town, well known over the years for the manufacture and production of chemicals, electric motors, textiles, wool and sheet metal. Huddersfield was the scene of considerable unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers called the Luddites, fearing the loss of their livelihood owing to ever increasing mechanisation, wrecked machinery and mills and even went as far as attacking and murdering mill owners. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in Huddersfield at present is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a proud tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which happened at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a row over the payment of players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were also famous for winning three league titles on the trot.

The town has been the birthplace of numerous notable Huddersfield including actor James Mason, Harold Wilson (PM), Derek Ibbotson and cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone.
