Huddersfield a Potted History: A very large and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is currently the United Kingdom's 11th largest town (not including cities), boasting a population of somewhere near 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is placed midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is some 191 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest town in that borough. It lies in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the production and manufacture of chemicals, sheet metal, textiles, electric motors and wool. It was the scene of considerable unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs on account of greater mechanization, damaged mills and their machines and even went to the extreme of killing textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the biggest employer in Huddersfield at present is the University.

Huddersfield has been settled for over 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over players being paid. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles.
