Huddersfield a Potted History: A historic and large market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, UK, Huddersfield today is the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, being home to a population of around 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is placed halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is about 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest urban area in the borough. Huddersfield stands in the valleys of two rivers, the Colne and Holme and the confluence of these 2 rivers is to the south of the town adjacent to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial area, widely known over the years for the production of sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors, textiles and wool. The town was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs as a result of greater mechanisation, damaged weaving machinery and mills and in some cases even attacked mill owners. Despite the predominance or industry the largest employer in the town at present is the University.

Huddersfield has been settled for more than four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition in relation to sports and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a row over players being paid. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles (1923-1926).
