Review of Huddersfield: An enormous and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is actually the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of close to 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is positioned roughly midway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is some 190 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous settlement in this borough. Huddersfield stands in the valleys of the River Colne and the River Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial area, famous over the centuries for the production of sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors, textiles and wool. The town was the scene of much unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers called the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs because of greater mechanization, demolished weaving machinery and mills and even attacked mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing the biggest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been settled for upwards of four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a disagreement over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and three successive league titles in the 1920's.

The area has been the birthplace of many notable Huddersfield including actor James Mason, Harold Wilson (PM), Derek Ibbotson and cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone.
