The Huddersfield area has been settled for upwards of four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sport and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 and were the first English club to win three successive league titles in the 1920's.
