Huddersfied was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition in relation to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which happened at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and three successive league titles.
