Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over players being paid. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and also won three successive league titles.
