About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the United Kingdom, Huddersfield is currently the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, housing a population of approximately 168,000 (2017). The town is placed roughly halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is about 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in that borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial area, well known over the years for the manufacturing of textiles, chemicals, sheet metal, electric motors and wool. Huddersfield was the scene of significant violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, faced with losing their livelihood owing to increasing mechanization, wrecked mills and machinery and even went as far as attacking and killing mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in Huddersfield at present is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud tradition in relation to sport and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles (1923-26).

The town has been the birthplace of many noteworthy Huddersfield including the likes of actor James Mason, Harold Wilson, Derek Ibbotson (athlete) and Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer).
