Huddersfield a Potted History: A historic and large market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the UK's 11th largest town (not including cities), being home to a population of around 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is placed roughly midway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is some 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous settlement in the borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial area, well known over the centuries for the production of sheet metal, textiles, wool, electric motors and chemicals. The town was the scene of considerable unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs due to ever increasing mechanization, wrecked machines and mills and even went as far as attacking and killing textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in the town at present is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for upwards of four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a bitter dispute over the payment of players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and also won 3 league titles on the trot.

The area has been the birthplace of many well known Huddersfield including the likes of Harold Wilson (PM), Chris Balderstone, film actor James Mason and Derek Ibbotson (athlete).
