Huddersfield a Short Guide: A historic and huge market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is at present the UK's 11th largest town (not including cities), having a population of somewhere near 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is positioned about midway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and is about 190 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban settlement in the borough. It sits in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial area, well known over the years for the manufacture and production of chemicals, textiles, sheet metal, wool and electric motors. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), they were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were also famous for winning 3 league titles on the trot.

The area has been the birthplace of many noteworthy Huddersfield such as Chris Balderstone, former PM Harold Wilson, James Mason and athlete Derek Ibbotson.
