Huddersfield has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were the first English club to win three successive league titles in the 1920's.
