The town has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU in a dispute over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles.
