About Huddersfield: An immense and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the UK's 11th largest town, being home to a population of close to 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is positioned halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and it is some 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest settlement in the borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial area, renowned over the centuries for the production of wool, textiles, chemicals, electric motors and sheet metal. Huddersfield was the scene of considerable unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood as a consequence of ever increasing mechanisation, demolished mills and weaving machinery and even murdered textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or industry and manufacturing the biggest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and also won three league titles on the trot.

The town has been the birthplace of quite a few noteworthy Huddersfield including Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), Derek Ibbotson, James Mason and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
