Review of Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is currently the 11th largest town in the United Kingdom, having a population of around 168,000 (2017). The town is placed about midway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and is approximately 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in the borough. It sits in the valleys of two rivers, the Holme and Colne and the confluence of these 2 rivers is to the south of the town near to the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, widely known over the centuries for the production of chemicals, textiles, sheet metal, electric motors and wool. Huddersfield was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood thanks to more and more mechanisation, wrecked mills and their machines and even went to the extreme of attacking and murdering textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or industry the largest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for upwards of four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over the payment of players. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles.

The town has been the birthplace of a number of well known Huddersfield including the likes of Chris Balderstone, Derek Ibbotson (athlete), Harold Wilson (PM) and James Mason.
