Huddersfield a Potted Guide: A historic and huge market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the UK's 11th largest town, having a population of about 168,000 (2017). The town is placed midway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and it is about 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in that borough. Huddersfield stands in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial area, well known over the years for the production of textiles, chemicals, electric motors, sheet metal and wool. The town was the scene of much unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood as a consequence of increased mechanisation, demolished mills and their machines and even went to the extreme of killing mill owners. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the biggest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

The area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a disagreement over the payment of players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles.

The area has been the birthplace of a number of notable Huddersfield including former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), Derek Ibbotson (athlete) and James Mason.
