Huddersfield a Potted History: An immense and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is presently the UK's 11th largest town, boasting a population of approximately 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is positioned roughly halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is approximately 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre for the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest urban settlement in this borough. It stands in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town adjacent to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial town, renowned over the centuries for the manufacturing of textiles, sheet metal, wool, electric motors and chemicals. Huddersfield was the scene of significant unrest during the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, fearful of losing their jobs owing to ever increasing mechanisation, destroyed machines and mills and even went to the extreme of attacking and murdering textile mill owners. The area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition in relation to sports and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU in a row over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles (1923-26).

The town has been the birthplace of many well known Huddersfield including the likes of Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), Harold Wilson, James Mason and Derek Ibbotson (athlete).
