Huddersfield a Quick Guide: A very large and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the eleventh largest town (not including cities) in the UK, being home to a population of approximately 168,000. Huddersfield is placed midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is some 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the biggest town in this borough. It lies in the valleys of two rivers, the Colne and Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near to the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, recognized over the years for the manufacture and production of chemicals, sheet metal, wool, textiles and electric motors. The town was the scene of much unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood due to the threat of mechanisation, wrecked machinery and mills and even attacked mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in the town today is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and also won 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
