About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is actually the eleventh largest town in the UK, housing a population of about 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is placed about midway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is approximately 190 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest town in this borough. It sits in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town beside the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial area, recognized over the centuries for the manufacturing of chemicals, wool, textiles, electric motors and sheet metal. The town was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, fearing the loss of their livelihood due to increased mechanization, demolished weaving machinery and mills and in some cases even murdered mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in the town today is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long tradition in relation to sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and 3 successive league titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26).
