About Huddersfield: A historic and huge market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the UK's 11th largest town (not including cities), being home to a population of close to 168,000. Huddersfield is positioned halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest town in that borough. It sits in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and the confluence of these 2 rivers is just to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial area, renowned over the years for the manufacture of textiles, electric motors, wool, sheet metal and chemicals. The town was the scene of much violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers known as the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs because of more and more mechanization, wrecked machines and mills and in some cases even attacked and murdered mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or industry the largest employer in the town today is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which happened at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a dispute over payments to players. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
