Huddersfield has a proud tradition in relation to sport and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a disagreement over payments to players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and three successive league titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26).
