Huddersfield a Quick Guide: A large and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is presently the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, boasting a population of around 168,000. The town is placed halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the biggest town in the borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near to the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, renowned over the centuries for the manufacture and production of sheet metal, textiles, wool, electric motors and chemicals. The town was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, frightened of losing their jobs as a consequence of increased mechanization, destroyed machines and mills and even murdered textile mill owners. Despite the predominance or industry the largest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for over four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a bitter row over players being paid. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and also won 3 league titles on the trot.
