The town is placed halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is about 191 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial town, renowned over the centuries for the manufacturing of textiles, electric motors, wool, sheet metal and chemicals. It was the scene of much violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers called the Luddites, faced with losing their jobs because of ever increasing mechanisation, damaged machinery and mills and even killed textile mill owners. The area has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition with regards to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a disagreement over payments to players. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and were the first English club to win three successive league titles.

The Huddersfield area has been the birthplace of numerous notable Huddersfield such as James Mason, Harold Wilson (PM), Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer) and athlete Derek Ibbotson.
