Huddersfield is positioned halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is some 191 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in that borough. It lies in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and the confluence of these 2 rivers is to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, recognized over the years for the production of sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors, textiles and wool. It was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers known as the Luddites, afraid of losing their livelihood as a result of ever increasing mechanisation, destroyed weaving machinery and mills and even went as far as attacking and murdering mill owners. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in Huddersfield these days is the University.

The area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.

The town has been the birthplace of many famous Huddersfield including the likes of James Mason, athlete Derek Ibbotson, footballer and cricketer Chris Balderstone and former PM Harold Wilson.
